About Us

About Us – Suzuki Motorcycle Corporation

Our Origins

Suzuki Motor Corporation traces its roots back to 1909, when founder Michio Suzuki established the Suzuki Loom Works in the coastal town of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan — a city that remains the company’s global headquarters to this day.

For the first three decades, Suzuki focused entirely on producing high-quality weaving looms for Japan’s silk and cotton industries. Michio Suzuki was a visionary craftsman, always striving to build better and more user-friendly machinery. Though his plans to diversify into motor vehicles were interrupted by World War II, his entrepreneurial spirit never faded.

The Birth of a Motorcycle Legacy

After the war, Japan had a great need for affordable and reliable personal transportation. In 1952, Suzuki responded with the Power Free — a motorized bicycle fitted with a 36cc two-stroke engine. It was simple, practical, and revolutionary for its time, giving riders the choice to pedal, use engine power, or combine both.

The Power Free was an instant success, and Suzuki quickly doubled down on motorcycle development. By 1954, the company was producing 6,000 motorcycles per month and officially changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd.

That same year, Suzuki launched the Colleda — its first true motorcycle, powered by a single-cylinder four-stroke engine. This marked the beginning of a motorcycle legacy that would span generations.

Racing Heritage & Global Recognition

Suzuki’s passion for performance was proven on the racetrack. In 1962, Suzuki achieved its first victory in Grand Prix motorcycle racing at the Isle of Man TT. Through the decades, Suzuki went on to win multiple Motocross World Championships and 500cc Grand Prix titles, cementing its reputation as a true performance brand.

Iconic models that defined the motorcycle world include:

  • 1965 X-6 Hustler — the fastest 250cc motorcycle of its era
  • 1981 GSX-1100S Katana — a design masterpiece inspired by the samurai sword
  • 1985 GSX-R750 — the bike that revolutionized the sportbike category
  • 1999 GSX-1300R Hayabusa — one of the fastest production motorcycles ever built
  • GSX-R1000 — a modern superbike benchmark worldwide

A Truly Global Company

Today, Suzuki Motor Corporation is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of motorcycles, automobiles, marine outboard engines, and all-terrain vehicles. The company has:

  • Over 45,000 employees worldwide
  • 35 production facilities in 23 countries
  • Products distributed in 192 countries through 133 distributors
  • A global presence spanning Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and beyond

Our Mission

Established in 1962, Suzuki’s Mission Statement continues to guide every employee and every decision across the global Suzuki Group:

  1. Develop products of superior value by focusing on the customer
  2. Establish a refreshing and innovative company through teamwork
  3. Strive for individual excellence through continuous improvement

Our Philosophy — Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi

At the heart of everything Suzuki builds is the philosophy of “Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi” — a Japanese phrase meaning “Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, and Beautiful.”

This principle guides Suzuki’s approach to design and manufacturing — creating products that are compact, efficient, and elegant while eliminating waste. It is not just a production motto; it is the soul of the Suzuki brand, reflected in every motorcycle that bears the Suzuki name.

Our Core Philosophies of Conduct

Suzuki’s corporate culture is shaped by three guiding principles:

  • Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi — A commitment to efficiency, compactness, and beauty in everything we make
  • 3G (Genba, Genbutsu, Genjitsu) — “Go to the actual place, observe the actual product, understand the actual situation” — a hands-on, problem-solving mindset
  • YARAMAIKA — The entrepreneurial spirit of Hamamatsu: a bold “Let’s do it!” attitude that encourages innovation, courage, and the willingness to take on any challenge

Our Brand Promise — “Way of Life!”

Suzuki’s global brand philosophy is captured in two powerful words: “Way of Life!”

It reflects the belief that a Suzuki motorcycle is more than a machine — it is a companion in every journey, an expression of freedom, and a partner in the everyday lives of millions of riders around the world.

Looking to the Future

Suzuki Motor Corporation continues to evolve with the times, investing in electrification, hybrid technology, and sustainable mobility — while staying true to its founding values of quality, reliability, and value for the customer. With a bold mid-term management plan guiding its path through 2030, Suzuki is committed to building a cleaner, smarter, and more connected future for riders everywhere.
